A private bush house wedged between boulders, 20 km east of Kamanjab. Yours alone, with a Himba village next door and Etosha an hour away.

The arrival

Some say it used to be Peter Pan’s hideaway in Neverland.

The truth is almost as good: the house was built as a set for the film The Trail. The cameras left. The house stayed, and the bush slowly made it a home.

The gravel road leaves the C40, twenty kilometres east of Kamanjab. A few bends later the bushveld opens and the house appears, its rooms and decks tucked between the boulders as if they had always been there.

No reception desk, no queue, no other guests. Check in from 2 pm, drop your bags, and take the first drink on the veranda.

The whole house is yours

When you book Onjowewe, you book all of it. One group at a time, so the house, the pool and the evening fire belong to your people only.

Evenings that last

Dinner is a Namibian farm-style meal, served when the heat has dropped. Breakfast, continental and hot, comes out on the deck, looking over the savannah.

Then the light goes. There is almost no phone signal and no light pollution, so what is left is the fire, the people you came with, and more stars than most guests have ever seen.

Spend a morning with the Himba

Not far from the house, the Otjikandero Himba Village welcomes small groups for a guided visit of one and a half to two hours.

This is not a show village. It is a home for around 45 orphaned Ovahimba children, who grow up in their own language, dress and customs, looked after by volunteer families from Kaokoland. Every visit you pay for goes straight to the Otjikandero Community Trust: food, school, teachers and guides, with three Himba trustees deciding how the money is used.
